Radiation Oncology

WHAT IS RADIATION ONCOLOGY?
Radiation oncologists treat patients with malignant and benign conditions using energetic radiation, for example X-rays or radioactive elements. Often radiation is integrated with other cancer treatments such as surgery or chemotherapy. Radiation oncologists are experts in various radiology imaging modalities and have in-depth understanding of the way radiation interacts with tissues in the human body.

The radiation oncologist helps diagnose patients, suggests treatment options, and is involved in the long-term care and follow-up of cancer patients. A radiation oncologist completes one year of a medicine or surgical internship, and then four years of training in radiation oncology. All ages of patients are seen, and all parts of the body are treated. Some common conditions treated at the MIMA Cancer Center are breast cancer, prostate cancer, gastrointestinal cancers, and lung cancer.

The MIMA Cancer Center is a state-of-the-art facility, and of course offers cohesive and multimodality care along with MIMA’s general surgery, medical oncology, urology, radiology, and other departments. The center is a national BrainLAB (a radiosurgery and image guided radiation therapy company) showcase site, and maintains an active brachytherapy (radioactive implant) program. Its physicians trained at two of the leading cancer centers in the U.S., Dr. Golden at the Northwestern University Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center in Chicago.
