WHAT IS GASTROENTEROLOGY?
Gastroenterologists are physicians who have completed special training in the diagnosis and treatment of symptoms and diseases of the gastrointestinal tract and liver. Gastroenterologists use a variety of tests, including X-rays and endoscopy, to study the intestines and liver of patients who visit them. Diseases treated and diagnosed by the gastroenterologist include irritable bowel syndrome, viral chronic hepatitis, Hepatitis C, cirrhosis, Chrohn’s diseas, ulcerative colitis and liver cancer.
Gastroenterologists are equipped to answer your questions, to perform tests in making a diagnosis and to prescribe the best course of treatment to help you feel better. People with complicated conditions often benefit from being treated by a specialist who has handled a large number of similar cases.
