Know more. Feel better.
MIMA Diabetes Self Management Education Program provides the highest level of
education to Diabetes patients so they can provide better care for themselves.
Diabetes patients often feel overwhelmed and fearful about the disease. The good
news is that with proper nutrition, medication, exercise, monitoring and
education, patients can take control and enjoy a high quality of life.
Recognized by the American Diabetes Association, the MIMA Diabetes Self
Management Education Program educates patients about quality diabetic care, and
more importantly, the steps needed to try to prevent or slow the effects of the
disease. Through cutting-edge research and educational information, MIMA
continues to work with patients and clinicians to perhaps one day change the way
a person is able to manage their disease. As testimony to the quality of care
provided at MIMA, 34 MIMA physicians are recognized by the National Committee
for Quality Assurance Diabetic Physician Recognition Program.
Under the direction of Dr. Ruben Pipek, Board Certified Endocrinologist,
the program provides care from a clinical staff who are certified diabetes
educators including a registered dietitian, and a registered nurse. MIMA
Endocrinologists and Family Practice physicians work closely with diabetes care
professionals to give patients a high level of care.
MIMA is passionate about offering comprehensive education, medical treatment and
support that address all of the components that comprise a successful care
program -- from support groups and individual counseling, to insulin pump
training and weight management.
- Educational Classes – a series of three classes, each 3-hours long, held
weekly for three consecutive weeks. Morning and afternoon class times are
offered. In addition, the class is offered one or two Friday’s a month from 8:30
am to 4:30 pm and one Saturday each month from 8:00 am – 4:00 pm.
- Individual Consultation - an individual consultation with the nurse
diabetes educator gives you time to ask questions and address concerns.
- Group Medical Nutrition Therapy – once classes are completed, you’ll meet
with the registered dietitian to give you the tools you need to further manage
your meal plan. These sessions allow one-on-one guidance for your specific needs
with respect to other health related concerns, schedules, and food preferences.
- Refresher Classes -- Program graduates of the comprehensive program can
attend a 2 hour annual update class every year. This class is designed to
provide updates on diabetes management and to examine progress toward meeting
treatment goals or to establish new goals or changes in your treatment plan as
needed.
Classes are held at the MIMA Gateway offices at 1223 Gateway Dr, Melbourne.
